One of the best parts of golfing in Columbiana County is that you can find a perfect course for your skill level. From 9-hole courses without bunkers to challenging championship style courses, Columbiana County has it all. It’s also a great place to golf in terms of price as many of the courses in the area offer very affordable greens fees. However, be sure to plan ahead as some of the courses do not accept credit cards.

Located near Beaver Creek State Park, Beaver Creek Meadows does a great job showcasing the nearby scenery. This third generation family-owned course is located on 120 acres of beautiful land which features picturesque tree-lined fairways and several water features. While some know the course for its “BCM” flower display that can be seen near the 10th hole, there are plenty of other reasons to visit Beaver Creek Meadows. 

As a relatively shorter course, it’s very friendly for seniors and women golfers. There are also no hidden holes, which makes it a nice fit for beginners as well, however there is a forced carry over a pond on the second hole of the front 9.

If you’re only planning to play 9 holes, the front 9 is shorter than the back. The back 9 is a bit more challenging with tighter features and water hazards that come into play multiple times.

Eagle Pass Golf Course is a 9-hole course open daily to the public and features a scenic course layout that includes two creeks that run through the property as well as a pond. Though it’s been known as “Eagle Pass” since 1996, the course was originally created decades earlier as “New Garden Golf Course.” 

The clubhouse is the highest point on the course and you begin with a downhill hole away from the clubhouse and finish with the most difficult hole coming uphill back towards the clubhouse. 

If you plan to play during the week, be sure to bring cash with you as the pro shop is not always staffed during the day and a cash box system is used to pay greens fees. However, if you need change or have any questions, the staff can typically be found mowing the course so you should be able to find someone to assist you. There are also several regular leagues throughout the week, so be sure to call ahead if you’re planning to play past 3pm on a weeknight.

While East Liverpool Country Club is private, the 9-hole golf course is open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You can also call the pro shop for availability on other days of the week.

The course is notable for its designer, Willie Park Jr. Park, who was a Scottish professional golfer that won the Open Championship twice and later went on to become a prolific course architect with designs in the US, Canada, and the UK. Some of Park’s notable course designs include Maidstone Golf Club in New York, New Haven Country Club in Connecticut, and the North Course at Olympia Fields Country Club in Illinois. 

East Liverpool Country Club can be deceptively difficult, despite its wide fairways. Its slope rating of 143 makes East Liverpool Country Club arguably the most difficult course in the county. However, the course offers three sets of tees, making it accessible for golfers of various skill levels. 

Another fun fact about this course is that its ninth hole can be played two different ways. It has two greens and two different sets of tees. This adds some variety for those playing 18 holes.

Despite its name, East Palestine Country Club’s golf course is open to the public. While the course is member-owned, there are no restrictions on play from non-members even in regards to tee times. The course does have regular leagues on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays starting at 4pm, so be sure to call the clubhouse for the best times to play. 

This course offers beautiful views of surrounding hills and the course elevation changes provide an interesting layout. If you have a tendency to slice the ball, you should play this course well as most of the out of bounds lies to the left side of fairways. Notably, the course is one of the oldest in the county, being founded in 1919.  

The club facilities are available for a number of non-member events including graduation parties, outings and wedding receptions.

Salem Golf Club is a private club, but non-members are welcome to test out the course as part of their “member for a day” promotion. The club is also open to hosting non-member events such as golf outings and its banquet center can hold around 300 people.  

The club is over 100 years old, founded in 1921, but its majestic clubhouse, originally a barn, dates back to 1910. One of the most unique aspects of Salem Golf Club is that President Warren G. Harding, who was close friends with local newspaper publisher Louis Brush, was known to have played the course many times. You can even see President Harding’s putter which is still on display at the club! 

The course itself  features an 18-hole layout with rolling hills and quick, undulating greens across over 200 acres of scenic property. The original 9 holes were designed by William Herbert “Bertie” Way who was one of America’s first club pros. Way is known as the original architect of Firestone Country Club’s South Course in Akron which has hosted over 70 professional tournaments.

Sleepy Hollow Golf Club is an 18-hole course located in the furthest west portion of Columbiana County in Alliance. Though the course is open to the public, it also offers various membership options as well including student and family packages.

The club features holes that follow rolling hills and predominantly tree-lined fairways. It contains several water features including a lake that comes into play on a few holes as well as some small creeks that cut across the property. According to the course’s website, the layout can be best described as “difficult yet relaxing.” 

Sleepy Hollow has a practice facility consisting of a driving range and putting areas and they also offer lessons. After the round, you can grab some nourishment at the Firehouse Bar and Grille located on property.

Opened in 2002, the Links at Firestone Farms is the newest addition to the golf course scene in Columbiana County. 

“The Links” is an 18-hole championship course located at the original homestead of Harvey Firestone, Firestone Farms. This course is built on rolling farmland and features an 84-acre lake as well as over 50 bunkers. 

“The Links” is only about 20 years old, but has been a popular course since its establishment. In 2003, it earned Golf Digest’s honor as the “Best new affordable public golf course in Ohio.” The course offers many sets of tees, making it accessible to a wide range of golfer skill levels. The course winds through open farmland as well as more heavily wooded areas making the full 18 hole playthrough a varied experience. 

Directly above the clubhouse, you can make Riser Tavern your 19th hole for drinks or dinner. 

“The Links” is part of the Firestone Farms development which offers many great amenities including a brewery, several restaurants, and shopping.

Turkana Golf Course is an 18-hole links style course winding through rolling farmland near East Liverpool. It offers four sets of tees, making it accessible for all skill levels. Like many courses in the county, elevation changes and beautiful vistas are hallmarks of this course. 

As a links-style course, there is a distinct lack of trees compared to other courses in the area, however this aspect of Turkana does not make the course too easy. The topography of the course combined with several water features provides an interesting challenge. The first hole features a pond just below the tee box and the picturesque 18th hole features potential water trouble on both sides of the fairway.  

The course has several practice facilities including two putting greens and a driving range. There are also staff available for lessons.

Twin Springs Golf Course is a 9-hole course near Lisbon. The course is on the shorter side, but  features some interesting topography including elevation changes and two ponds that must be carried for a successful shot. The course is open during the week but closes at 5pm on Wednesdays for league play. 

Be sure to bring cash and your own refreshments if playing in the summer, as the pro shop is not always staffed and green fees are paid with an on-site money box.

Valley Golf Club, located in the city of Columbiana, is a hidden gem. This 9-hole course is perfect for beginners as it has no sand traps or rough and has limited water hazards. It’s also a shorter course at only 3000 yards from the longer of two sets of tees. 

“Valley” as it’s shortened to by locals is also fun for more experienced golfers. In fact, two area high schools call the course home. Because of its shorter length and unique layout, golfers are forced to think strategically. 

Be sure to call ahead for tee times as the course hosts leagues several times per week and outings on the weekends. Also make sure to bring cash as the club does not accept credit cards. Valley also has a pro shop with basic golf amenities as well as vending machines. There is also a PGA member golf professional available for lessons by appointment.

Opened in 1967, Westville Lake Country Club is a 9-hole golf course that is fully open to the public. It also offers several other amenities including a driving range and indoor archery facility. 

One of the highlights of this course is its beauty. Most first-timers playing the course are impressed with how the it looks. Westville Lake Country Club starts with a simple, straight-forward hole that goes away from the clubhouse, but things become a bit more challenging after that opening. The course features several water hazards that add some challenge and complexity to the routing including a creek that cuts across the property, a scenic lake that separates the 5th and 7th hole, and a small pond just below the tee box of the 9th hole. 

Be sure to call ahead for tee time availability as the course does host several leagues throughout the week.
